Frederick Richard Simms was a mechanical engineer, inventor, businessman, and a pioneer in the motor industry.
Simms’s first major business venture was the Simms Manufacturing Company Ltd set up in 1903 in Kilburn, London. It was there that they made cars, lorries military vehicles and guns, marine engines, fire engines, agricultural vehicles, and aeronautical devices. He subsequently founded Simms Motor Units Ltd. to sell and repair components (particularly dynamos and magnetos).
However, it was during the 1930’s that a range of diesel fuel injectors was developed alongside Leyland Motors, and this collaboration produced the Uniflow injection pump in 1937. Parts produced by Simms went into the manufacture of many vehicles, particularly for the second World War and subsequently. Simms parts were used extensively in agricultural machinery, including tractors, in post war Britain which was a time of expansion for the company.
Simms Motor Units was taken over by Lucas CAV in 1968.
